Located in the historic D.C. City Post Office next to the restored Union Station, the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum showcases the largest and most comprehensive collection of stamps and philatelic material in the world—including postal stationery, vehicles used to transport the mail, mailboxes, meters, cards and letters, and postal materials that predate the use of stamps. Visitors can walk along a Colonial post road, ride with the mail in a stagecoach, browse through a small town post office from the 1920s, receive free stamps to start a collection and more.
The thirty-second president of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945), was an avid stamp collector. FDR’s stamp collection was a childhood hobby he took to the Oval Office. Stamp collectors still seek out parts of his stamp collection, and many collectors were inspired by the President when starting their hobby. His knowledge of philatelics is featured in numerous exhibitions.
As President, FDR also had a considerable impact on stamps. He met with Postmaster General James A. Farley in the 1930s to discuss ideas for stamp designs and actually drew some designs himself. In fact, he contributed to the designs of more than 200 postage stamps. FDR was also proud of his stamp collecting. He spoke of it in interviews and was photographed many times with his extensive collection. The President, in many ways, made it popular for adults to collect stamps.
